Afghan elected official shot, possible Taliban target

Killed by a single shot by a gunman on a motorcycle, Afghan elected official Amanullah Aman was targeted on his way to his office this morning.  

While elections are not scheduled for another year, elected officials are often the targets of such violent acts which serve as a warning to those wishing to run or those planning to participate in future elections reports Al Jazeera.

Despite offers from law-enforcement agencies to assist in protection, Aman refused preferring to walk the city with no guards stated local police official Ebadullah Talwar.

While no one is taking credit for the attack at this time, it is likely that blame will be focused on Taliban insurgents. Kunduz, while located in the more peaceful north of Afghanistan, is also known for its connection to Taliban activity. In recent history, Taliban have warned against any involvement of citizens in next year’s poll.
