The ruling Taliban and its rivals have agreed to a temporary ceasefire for a final round of polio immunization in Afghanistan next week, the United Nations said Saturday.
The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have received "written commitments" from both sides, the office of the UN coordinator for Afghanistan here said.
The organizations are hoping to immunize a total of some 5.4 million children.
The final rounds of vaccinations are to be carried out November 13-15 in most parts of the country and November 15-17 in northeastern Takhar province, where recent fighting has displaced tens of thousands of people.
The previous polio vaccination round was held in October when both sides respected a truce agreement -- ISLAMABAD (AFP)
