Afghan and U.S. forces rescued the kidnapped son of a former Pakistani prime minister, following a three-year Taliban captivity in Afghanistan, Pakistan said on Tuesday.
Ali Haider Gilani, son of ex-premier Yusuf Raza Gilani, "has been recovered today in a joint operation carried out by the Afghan and U.S. security forces in Ghazni, Afghanistan," the Pakistani foreign office said in a statement. It added that he would be transferred to Pakistan after a medical check-up.
Last year, the elder Gilani, whose secular anti-Taliban Pakistan People's Party led several major offensives against militants, said the kidnappers demanded the release of several al-Qaeda prisoners in exchange for his son.
Gilani, believed to be in his 30s, was abducted from his home town of Multan, in southern Punjab province, two days before Pakistan's landmark May 11, 2013 general elections.
