ADNEC and ADTA unveil 3 new Summer in Abu Dhabi Islands

Creativity Island, Action Island and Heritage & Culture Island provide some the most eagerly anticipated attractions.

Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) and Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) have announced details of the three remaining themed Islands – Creativity, Action and Heritage & Culture - that make up “Summer in Abu Dhabi”, the UAE capital’s largest and most prestigious family festival taking place from June 26 to August 18th 2008, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. Earlier, ADNEC and ADTA had unveiled the first four themed segments of the summer extravaganza, namely, the Discovery; Imagination; Adventure; and Fun Islands.

The “Summer in Abu Dhabi” festival, being held in a 13,000 square metre air-conditioned indoor venue, is being jointly organised by ADNEC and the ADTA and is being supported by Etisalat, the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH), and Capital Centre. The eight-week festival is expected to attract thousands of visitors from across the UAE and wider Gulf region, making it one the summer’s most eagerly anticipated events.

His Excellency Ahmad Humaid Al Mazrouie, ADNEC Managing Director, said, “The “Summer in Abu Dhabi” festival is poised to become one of the most exciting family entertainment events held in the region; it will be unsurpassed in terms of edutainment value, novelty and excitement. A great deal of planning and effort has gone into finalizing the concept for each of the themed Islands, the overriding objective being to provide eight weeks of high quality fun, entertainment and education for the entire family.”

The Creativity Island at “Summer in Abu Dhabi”, as the name suggests, will be an exclusive arena showcasing various creative talents. Circus shows – featuring juggling, stilt walking, acrobatics, face painting and tight rope walking – will be one of the main attractions in this Island. Another crowd-puller at the Creativity Island is expected to be the Capital Centre sponsored ‘Build a City’ exhibition, an interactive educational event where children can learn the basics of construction in a fun-filled setting. The ‘Arts & Crafts activity zone’ featuring painting, jewellery making and pot painting, and the ‘Dance Heads’ section, where children have an opportunity to captivate audiences with their dance performances, will be other attractions at the Creativity Island.

The Action Island is segmented into ‘Urban Area’, ‘Sports Zone’ and the ‘Chill Out Zone’. The ‘Urban Area’ is expected to be one of the busiest sections of the “Summer in Abu Dhabi” festival, as it features skill demonstrations by freestyle BMX bikers, soccer players and DJs. While the ‘Sports Zone’ will be a test of various sporting skills, including climbing, football, basketball and rodeo bull riding, the ‘Chill Out Zone’ is designed to provide children above 13 an area to relax and unwind while enjoying live DJ music.

The Culture Island has been planned in coordination with the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage to enhance knowledge about the UAE’s rich culture and heritage among the thousands of children and parents who will visit the “Summer in Abu Dhabi” festival. The Culture Island will specifically focus on the country’s folkloric dances, calligraphy, ornaments, handicrafts, traditional music, traditional food and various art forms.

“Visitors to “Summer in Abu Dhabi” will certainly recognise the attention to detail that has gone into the planning of the event to make it the most comprehensive, educational and entertaining family festivals in the Middle East,” concluded Mazrouie.

Summer in Abu Dhabi will run at ADNEC from June 26 to August 18, 2008. The show is open from 12 pm to 9pm daily.  Tickets are priced at AED 30 for adults and AED 20 for children under 16. All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
