ADC Announces Beneficiaries of Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah Scholarships for Aqaba’s Old Town

The Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC) announced yesterday the names of the students who were selected for Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah Scholarships, which are being provided by ADC for the year 2009.

Under the patronage of H.E. Chief Commissioner of ASEZA, the announcement took place during a special ceremony at Abu Ayyoub Al Ansari School in Aqaba's Old Town, attended by the beneficiaries, their families and representatives of the local community.

The scholarships initiative came as a result of Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah's visit to the Old Town last April, during which Her Majesty was introduced to the results of a comprehensive study of the town prepared by the Jordan River Foundation (JRF) and ADC. The study revealed the low level of education, specifically higher education, being provided in the Old Town.

Eng. Imad Fakhoury, ADC’s CEO stated, “Quoting Her majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah as saying “Give those who had underprivileged beginnings the chance to change their paths and make the best of their lives," we believe that education should be equally available to every citizen especially for the development of human capital and for creating a generation that is capable of meeting the current and future needs of the local job market."

He added, “I would also like to highlight that the city of Aqaba can only accomplish its goals if every individual receives the level of education they deserve. If an equal opportunity for education is not guaranteed, the underprivileged will always remain one step behind and therefore they will not benefit from the developmental process taking place in Aqaba. This is the reason behind the launch of these scholarships— we want to ensure that the social and financial status of the residents will never stop them from receiving an education.  This falls in line with our local development efforts, national development efforts and a translation of His Majesty King Abdullah II’s vision."

ADC funds the scholarships and covers all tuition fees in addition to a JD50 monthly allowance for each student.
