Top Palestinian Authority official Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) said Friday that the PA was calling for a-one year demilitarization of the intifada, and that PA Chairman Yasser Arafat's administration had called on Palestinians to refrain from attacks.
"We call for a demilitarization of the intifada for one year, for a renunciation of military actions," the Interfax news agency quoted Abu Mazen as saying. With Palestinians refraining from violence and a continuation of Israeli force, "everyone will be shown who is guilty for the continuation of the conflict," he said.
Abu Mazen's statement came at a joint appearance with Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov, who warned against trying to modify the "road map" for a Middle East peace settlement.
"Any changes made by anyone would only push the settlement process back for a long time. This must be prevented," Ivanov was quoted as saying by Interfax. (Albawaba.com)
