Palestinian prime minister Mahmud Abbas Monday arrived in Cairo airport on a flight from the Jordanian capital Amman. From the airport he went for talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
Abbas and Mubarak will discuss "the peace process in the Middle East, the implementation of the (peace) roadmap and the truce" declared by Palestinian factions at the end of June, sources close to Mubarak told AFP.
Sources said Abbas would brief the Egyptian leader on his
government's efforts to implement the Middle East peace plan and on the outcome of his latest meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
The Palestinian prime minister, who had travelled overnight from the West Bank town of Ramallah to Amman, was due to return to the Jordanian capital on Tuesday for talks with King Abdullah.
He will then depart for Washington where he is due to arrive on Wednesday night. Abbas is due to hold talks with US President George W. Bush on Friday.
His departure followed a "difficult" meeting on Sunday with Sharon when the two did not reach an agreement over the issue of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails and Yasser Arafat's continued confinement to his headquarters in Ramallah.
Overnight Monday, an Islamic Jihad activist was killed while activating a roadside bomb near an Israeli military vehicle near the West Bank city of Jenin. (Albawaba.com)
