More than 720 kilograms (1,587 pounds) of TNT belonging to the group behind multiple mega-bombings in the Sinai peninsula were found late Sunday in the northern Sinai town of Al Arish.

“The explosives were hidden there by individuals connected to the triple bombings in the Taba area” that had left at least 34 people dead in October 2004, said one local security official according to the AFP.

Three men accused of belonging to group, known as the Tawhid wal Jihad (Unity and Holy War), were sentenced to death in November. Deadly bombings blamed on the same group were also carried out in 2005 in the Sinai resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh, as well as in 2006 in Dahab.

The group has also been blamed for pledging allegiance to Osama bin Laden’s Al Qaeda network.

Amongst the explosives found were two gas canisters and twelve bags packed with TNT and linked to detonators.
