At least 53 internet firms worldwide shut down or declared bankruptcy in June, compared with 54 at the same end-of-month point in May and 55 at the end of April, bringing total closures since January 2000 to 555, according to reports.

Webmaster.com said May's toll had since risen to 60 as news of additional shutdowns surfaced after the month's end.

April's adjusted shutdowns figure is now 59.

So far, at least 555 substantial internet companies around the world have shut down since January 2000. Of that number, 330, or almost 60 percent of the total, closed their doors in the first six months of 2001 alone, the report added.

The first half's death toll was more than nine times that of the same period last year, when 36 Internet companies failed. Last June, 17 internet companies shut down – Albawaba.com
