Twelve Yemeni troops and 24 Shiite rebels died in clashes amid reports about an imminent accord to end six months of fighting, a military official said on Thursday. Speaking to AFP, an official said five soldiers and 13 rebels were killed in clashes late on Wednesday in Amran province north of Sanaa.
According to him, the fighting had erupted in the area of Burkat al-Shamsi following a sudden attack by the Zaidi Shiite rebels (Houtis). Separate clashes broke out late on Wednesday in the Al-Uqab suburb of Saada town, killing seven soldiers and 11 rebels.
A Yemeni official said on Wednesday that the government was close to reaching a deal with the rebels after they agreed to six government conditions. Reports on Thursday said that post-war committees are already underway. Sources familiar with the matter told 26sep.net on Thursday that the committees include a committee from Parliament and Shura Council to oversee implementing the conditions, a committee to tackle the impacts of the war in Saada and a third committee to contribute to arrangements for bringing peace into the region.
They will supervise reopening roads, Houthi withdrawal from their positions, the return of the displaced and releasing those who were arrested in connection with the rebellion.
