Thirty people were killed and 50 others injured on Saturday in a blast that rocked the city of Bayda in the south of Yemen, reported Al Jazeera satellite channel.

The explosion occurred when a shop selling gunpowder in the city’s souk caught fire. Other shops in the same area also sell gunpowder.

The station’s correspondent in Sanaa said it was not known whether the blast was a terrorist act or an accident.

Security sources were quoted as saying the casualties were eight dead and 20 injured, but medical sources confirmed the initial report that put the fatalities at 30.

However, independent sources said that the number of the casualties might rise, as rescue teams were removing debris to find survivors buried under the rubble – Albawaba.com
