ALBAWABA - A video posted on the Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) page on Twitter, rebranded as X, shows a number of Sudanese Armed Forces soldiers allegedly announcing their defection from the army and pledging allegiance to the RSF.
The video was accompanied by a statement that supports the RSF allegations, reading: "In response to the call of Lieutenant General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, and in response to the aspirations of the Sudanese people yearning for freedom, peace, justice, and democracy; Today, 65 honorable members of the armed forces, including 3 officers, announced their joining the Rapid Support Forces in the Omdurman sector".
The statement continues to glorify the alleged defection of the army soldiers: "We welcome this group; We renew the call to all honorable people to follow the people's choice in order to build our country on new and just foundations that achieve security, stability, peace, justice, and equality".
They continued on to say that because of its current leadership, the armed forces have devolved into a military wing that obeys the remnants' orders, resulting in a loss of professionalism and nationalism, which necessitates a decisive stance from the "honorable people" within it that is consistent with its basic duty and is in line with the aspirations of the people rather than the desires of the defunct regime.
This alleged defection follows a couple of days of heavy combats hammering on the city of Nyala, where clashes have erupted on a regular basis between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary RSF resulting in the killing least eight people were killed on Saturday alone.
According to witnesses, the fierce combats have recently spread 100 kilometers west of Nyala, in the Kubum area, killing dozens of civilians along the way.
The UN’s special representative to Sudan, Volker Perthes, warned in July that the conflict showed no signs of a quick resolution and "risked morphing into an ethnicized civil war".
