Iraqi forces have launched a massive attack against Daesh in Tikrit, causing over 28,000 people to flee their homes, reports AFP.
According to a statement made by the United Nations, "military operations in and around Tikrit have precipitated displacement of an estimated 28,000 people to Samarra."
"Field reports indicate that additional displacements are underway and that yet more families remain stuck at checkpoints," the statement said.
On Monday, upwards of 30,000 Iraqi forces and allied fighters launched the attack against Daesh to liberate the northern province of Salahuddin. Tikrit is a strategic city, as it serves as the administrative center of the contested province.
