More than 200 Nigerians were deported this week from Saudi Arabia for living in the country without valid residence or work permits, airport officials in northern Nigeria said Thursday.
The 221 deportees, mainly women, arrived at Kano airport on Wednesday aboard a Nigeria Airways DC-10 aircraft, the officials told AFP by telephone.
The Nigerians were said to be among more than 500 foreigners deported from Saudi Arabia since July 3rd when a new law came into effect allowing authorities to clamp down on illegal immigrants.
According to the new regulation, any illegal immigrant arrested should either be taken to a deportation camp or jailed for six months before being deported.
Other nationals who have been deported were Indians, Yemenis and Pakistanis - LAGOS (AFP)
