In the deadliest day of road accidents in Iran, 122 people died and almost 2,000 were injured Monday in more than 900 different accidents, state-run Tehran television reported.
The TV broadcast said such a high number of traffic casualties was unprecedented in the Islamic Republic. In 933 accidents all over the country, 122 people were killed and 1,855 injured. About 350 ambulances recovered the casualties, it said, according to AP.
Iran has one of the highest rates of road accidents in the world, with more than 200,000 accidents and about 15,000 deaths each year.
Experts blame old and unsafe vehicles, disregard for regulations and inadequate emergency services.
Few details were made available on specific accidents. The Islamic Republic News Agency reported 10 people were killed and 171 injured in 126 accidents in and around the capital, Tehran, in the first few days of the Iranian new year, which began March 21. (Albawaba.com)
