Suspected Muslim militants strapped explosives onto a mule and triggered a blast Saturday killing two border security guards and injuring four in the restive Indian state of Kashmir, an official said.

A.K Sethi from the Border Security Force (BSF) told AFP that this was the first time Kashmiri militants had "stooped to using animals as bomb couriers" in the over decade-long Muslim insurgency in Kashmir.

The pack mule loaded with plastic explosives was sent off in the direction of a border security force post in Lapri village, in Udhampur district, some 150 kilometers (93 miles) northwest of Kashmir's winter capital Jammu, said Sethi.

"The militants used a remote control device to blow up the mule. Two of our men died on the spot, while four more have been seriously injured in the explosion," said Sethi.

Troops cordoned off the area and the BSF put out an alert warning India's armed forces to be wary of stray cattle posing similar bomb threats.

The insurgency in Indian Kashmir has claimed more than 34,000 lives since its launch in 1989 -- JAMMU (AFP)
