Working into a town turned into a cemetery  

In Aleppo, almost every public garden has turned into a cemetery. 

There are no more restaurants, no more leisurely distractions, no more happiness. Several times a day, you hear Bashar al-Assad's army planes passing overhead. You are never safe.

Each moment of each day, when you walk in the street, when you're at home or at the mosque, you risk death. You can face a barrel bomb at any minute.

Meet the hijab-waring model who just got cast in a major H&M campaign 

The fact that a strikingly beautiful 23-year-old just landed an H&M campaign isn't all that surprising. What is surprising is that the model, London native Mariah Idrissi, wears a hijab.

According to Fusion, earlier this year Idrissi received a call from a model scout who wanted to cast her in "Close the Loop," a sustainable fashion campaign for H&M. At first, Idrissi was skeptical, asking the scout, "Are you sure they know I wear a hijab?"

Celebrating Mawlids: Sufi traditions in Egypt's Humaithara Valley  

Over the past month, nearly half a million people have arrived at the Humaithara Valley that lies 140 kilometers southwest of Marsa Alam on the western shore of the Red Sea. They are all there to celebrate the Mawlid, or birth, of Sufi Sheikh Abul Hassan Al-Shazli, by standing on the Humaithara Mountain at the same time Sunni pilgrims stand on Mount Arafat in Saudi Arabia. Sufi devotees consider the Humaithara Mountain to be a “shrine” for the late Sufi Sheikh and the Qibla for their prayers, and insist on visiting the site despite the long and difficult journey from Cairo, which lies 1000 kilometers away.
