Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh stated Monday only defeat at the ballot box will make him quit. "If they want me to quit, I will only leave through the ballot box," Saleh told a news conference. "The opposition are raising the level of their demands, some of which are illicit," the veteran Yemeni leader said.

He made these remarks as opposition MPs joined students who have been protesting the capital for the past nine days.In the country's south, police shot dead on Monday a protester in Aden.

Meanwhile, Yemeni clerics published a statement on Monday banning the use of force against protesters. "Any act of beating or killing of protesters is a deliberate crime," said the association of Yemeni clerics headed by Sheikh Abdul Majid Zindani.
