Yemen's opposition groups said they had offered President Ali Abdullah Saleh plans for a "smooth exit" from power by the end of this year in an attempt to end the country's political crisis. During "a meeting with religious scholars, we've agreed on a settlement proposal including a roadmap for the president's departure before the end of this year," said a statement by the parliamentary opposition spokesman, Mohammed al-Sabri.

The president would "decide whether to accept or reject this proposal," said the statement, which was cited by AFP. The Yemeni leader has repeatedly rejected calls for his resignation. The current term of the Yemeni president, who has ruled for the past 32 years, ends in 2013.
