World powers urged Tehran on Saturday to agree to give up most of its stockpile of enriched uranium under a revised proposal for a nuclear fuel swap. During a meeting in Turkey, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton presented to the Iranian side a proposal to send abroad 2,800 kg of low-enriched uranium (LEU) and 40 kg of higher-grade material.
The talks ended without any progress on this or other issues over Iran's nuclear program, Reuters reported.
According to Ashton, she had hoped for a detailed and constructive discussion on the fuel swap and other ideas. "But it become clear that the Iranian side was not ready for this, unless we agreed to preconditions relating to enrichment and sanctions," she said.
the two sides declared their wish to meet again but no specific date or venues were agreed.
