One of the most infamous Tunisian figures and a close relative of the ousted president Zine El Abidin Ben Ali, has died of a knife injuries in a hospital in Tunis. Imed Trabelsi, nephew of the former first lady Leila Ben Ali, died on Sunday in a military hospital in the capital city of Tunis, AFP reported.
In May, former Tunisian president appointed Trabelsi as mayor of the commune of La Goulette north of Tunis. His appointment was slammed by the opposition since he had gained a bad reputation for corrupt practices.
Many of Ben Ali's family members have left the country for fear of personal safety.
Meanwhile, Tunisia's police have arrested the head of the presidential guard for Ben Ali.
The Tunisian TAP news agency reported Sunday that Ali Seriati and several colleagues have been detained on accusations they had plotted against state security.
