Syrian security forces killed at least 25 people Friday as thousands of Syrians protested across the country calling for the downfall of President Bashar Assad's regime, activists said.
The unrest spilled over into Lebanon. Four people were killed and at least eight others wounded on Friday in clashes between gunmen positioned in the rival neighborhoods of Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tabbaneh in the northern city of Tripoli, state-run National News Agency reported. The gunfight broke out at Syria Street, which divides the two neighborhoods, after a demonstration in support of the Syrian people.
The protests in Syria came hours after the army took control of another northwestern town.
Syria's state-run TV said Friday that a policeman was killed and more than 20 were hurt when "armed groups" opened fire at them. It added that six police officers were injured in Deir el-Zour when gunmen attacked a police station in the area.
Nine people died in the central city of Homs, two in the eastern town of Deir el-Zour and two in the Damascus suburb of Harasta, one in the major northern city of Aleppo. Another person died in the southern village of Da'al.
