Street firefights reported on Thursday between the Yemeni army and opposition tribesmen in the capital Sanaa as dozens of people on both sides were killed and injured. Elsewhere, tribal fighters fought to break through government lines on the northern outskirts of the capital.

According to the AP, the Yemeni defense ministry issued a statement claiming the army stopped the tribesmen from entering Sanaa. An officer, who defected from the army, said the fighting was within 15 kilometers of the northern outskirts of Sanaa.

Heavy casualties were reported inside the city's Hassaba neighborhood. At least 15 were killed in overnight clashes. Sanaa airport was closed on Wednesday night and remains shut for fear that planes could be hit in the heavy shelling around the city.

In the southern city of Taez, three protesters were hurt in fighting with security men. Sources said security forces raided the house of Taez opposition lawmaker Sultan al-Samie on Wednesday night and confiscated his computer and documents.
