Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Tuesday reaffirmed his country's commitment to an independent Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as its capital. He made this remark during a visit to the West Bank.
"We have supported the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as its capital since the last century, and we still support it," Medvedev said at a joint press conference with Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas.
On his part, Abbas called the international Quartet, which will meet in Munich next month, to take concrete decisions to force Israel to return to the peace process. "There are two options, either the negotiations and peace or violence and terrorism. We will not choose violence and terror, and so we say to the Israelis they must choose the path of peace for their own interest and the interest of the next generations. They must stop settlement activities and go back immediately to the negotiating table.
