Hundreds of Bahraini riot police drove demonstrators out of Manama's Pearl Square Wednesday. According to AFP, police forces arrived early morning in tanks, military vehicles and buses to move the Shiite demonstrators, who have been camped out in the square for a month to press for political reform.
The police tore down the tents and took up positions around the square. Then troops entered the financial centre to clear it of roadblocks and protesters.
Late Tuesday, five of the senior Shiite clerics in Bahrain called on the international community and Islamic world to intervene to prevent a "massacre" in Bahrain.
