The Pentagon on Sunday denied an unofficial Iranian report that seven American troops had been arrested by Iranian border guards near the border with Pakistan, saying no US troops were missing. "We have no missing soldiers. All accounted for," Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said in an email rejecting the report on an Iranian website as "false."
Iranian state television also said Iranian officials had denied the report of the arrests, which was carried by Fars news agency. The later withdrew the story. On its part, al-Alam TV channel quoted Iran's Revolutionary Guards, in charge of Iran's border security, as denying that any such incident had happened in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan.
A spokesman for NATO-led forces in Afghanistan, U.S. Captain Ryan Donald, said no U.S. soldiers had been detained by Iran or were missing.
