An Israeli air attack killed a Palestinian fighter in the northern Gaza Strip on Sunday when he and others tried to launch a rocket or mortar shell towards Israel, the Israeli army and Palestinian sources said. According to Reuters, Palestinian medical officials conveyed the dead man had been identified as a member of the Islamic Jihad.
"Men were targeted in an air strike after they were spotted preparing to fire a rocket or a mortar shell at Israel and we identified a hit," said an Israeli military spokeswoman.
Meanwhile, Israel's UN ambassador said Israel will only stop its disputed settlement building when an agreement is signed with the Palestinians. Meron Reuben was quoted as saying by AFP: "I don't think they agree with the way we are going, but they definitely understand the fact that settlements are not a burden on the peace process and not something that will stop the peace process."
