Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday asked Dr. Salam Fayyad to form a new government after the resignation of the previous government Monday morning. The main tasks of the new government will be to make preparations for presidential, legislative and local elections.
According to an official statement, "Abbas insisted that the new government should focus its work on the mobilization of all energies to strengthen the preparedness of national institutions for the establishment of the independent State of Palestine."
Fayyad has vowed in the letter of resignation that the new government would continue the new work started by the previous government in order to build the national institutions on the way for an independent state.
Fayyad said in the letter of resignation, "I hope that the next government will push the pace and agitate full energies to complete the implementation of this program."
Meanwhile, the rivals of the Palestinian Authority, Hamas, described the resignation of the Fayyad government as useless and without any contribution to needed reforms. Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said: "This change has no value to the interests of our people. It is a repositioning of the leaders of this government, who will continue their influence in the West Bank."
Barhoum's statement added the reshuffle of this government would not give it the legitimacy it lacks, since it was not the choice of the people and it did not enjoy the confidence of the Legislative Council. Barhoum called on all Palestinian and international authorities not to deal with this government.
