Osama bin Laden is dead, US sources confirmed Monday. According to these sources, the Saudi-born terror leader was killed by a U.S. operation on Sunday. The U.S. had been waiting for the results of a DNA test to confirm his identity.
American sources, on Monday, said the leader of al Qaeda had resisted the American forces and was killed by bullets to his head during the armed clashes which broke out after the raid on the compound where he was staying, outside the Pakistani capital , Islamabad.
The official said three other men were also killed during the operation in addition to a woman who was used as a human shield. Reports said one of Bin Laden's sons was also killed.
President Obama said last August he was told of a lead where bin Laden would be. Over the past few months a security team learned of a compound he had been hiding.
At the US leader’s order a small team killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan on Sunday. Obama conveyed that no civilians were wounded in the fire fight that took place before bin Laden’s death, and that no soldiers were harmed.
“The death of bin Laden marks the greatest success in our campaign to stop terrorism,” said President Obama during a live television announcement from the White House.
Obama stated he had spoken with the leaders of Pakistan and that they agree this is a historic day in their fight against al Qaeda.
