Reuters news agency quoted eyewitnesses as saying that a convoy of 20 military vehicles, including trucks carrying anti-aircraft guns were seen Sunday leaving Sirte and moving west towards Tripoli. In addition, dozens of civilian cars carrying families and loaded with luggage were seen moving west on the coastal road from Sirte to the Libyan capital .
The opposition said its forces are heading to Tripoli after it tightened its control over the hometown of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, Sirte. This was the last city before the regime stronghold of Tripoli, which lies about 435 km from Sirte. The opposition forces made rapid progress to the west, supported by the international coalition air strikes.
The city of Sirte is the third in a row which the opposition takes control in the past week after Bin Jawad, Ras Lanuf and Brega. In the city of Misrata west of the country, an opposition spokesman said that fighting continued for control of the main street in the city, Reuters reported that Gaddafi's forces controlled a small portion in the western part of the city.
