It seems that the demonstrations and protests in Morocco have begun to generate results. Indeed, Abdul Ben Amour, President of the Competition Council, confirmed that an amendment to the statute that establishes the Council will give it strength to fight the economic rent, which will help resist the economic corruption ramping in Morocco in recent year.
Ben Amour pointed out the existence of groups in Morocco that have large immunity and resist to reform efforts in Morocco. The reforms happening in Morocco could not yet extract the roots of these groups. Indeed, these groups resistant to these reforms could beat the political will that is willing to reform the economic situation in Morocco. They reject to adopt principles of transparency and free competition, which requires as confirms Ben Amour to be dealt with firmly and decisively to stop the secret hands that are abusing the political and economic situation in the country.
Ben Amour explained that expanding the powers of the Council and enable it to have a decisive role as it is the case for competition boards in a number of countries, will enable the council to ensure free and fair competition which will eventually lead to improving the business climate on the one hand and contribute to the promotion of economic and social development on the other hand.
Ben Amour obtained a prestigious royal reception which implies the importance given by the King Mohammed VI to strengthen the significant role of this institution in the consolidation of the state of rights and contribution to the rehabilitation and modernization of the national economy. Indeed, Ben Amour noted that the Competition Council strive to protect the principles of fair competition and encourages the respect of rules, which will help create the conditions that would improve the business climate, attract foreign investments and contribute to strengthening the sustained economic dynamism taking place in Morocco in recent years. This is tantamount with the current trends noted by the Royal speech on the 9th March of this year.
Ben Amour assured that the council will make every effort to fight the economic rent. The council will rely on a team of economists and lawyers who have the necessary skills to allow the Council undertake active roles within the framework of strategic and structural reforms to accelerate the process of national economy rehabilitation and provide the right conditions to stimulate investment and strengthen the confidence of local and international investors on the Moroccan financial market.
On the other hand, Ben Amour noted that the Competition Council will address the issue of economic rent in a workshop, expected to take place on the 21th of April in Rabat preparing for the international debate about competition that will take place from the 14th to 17th of December in Tangier.
