According to unconfirmed press reports, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi left the country to an unknown destination. The demonstrations that swept Libya to demand the regime departure and reforms on Monday spread to the center of the capital Tripoli. This came after they reached a climax in Benghazi where scores of citizens were killed and wounded during the protests.

Hundreds of Libyans Monday morning raided a building site run by a South Korean company in Tripoli, which led to the injury of 4 foreigners.

Meanwhile, Libyan sources said that a senior figure in the Libyan army is trying to lead a coup against Gaddafi.

The officer was identified as Deputy Chief of Staff, Al Mahdi Al Arabi. The source said that fierce battles were reported between the remnants of the revolutionary guard committees close to Gaddafi and supporters of al Arabi.

The source added: "There are reports that fierce fighting is taking place near the headquarters and that the commander of special division, Abdullah Sanusi was wounded and maybe have been killed."
