At least nine killed in Iraq blasts

Suicide bombers activated two explosives-packed cars Monday outside Baghdad's Green Zone, killing at least nine people and injuring 23, officials said. According to media reports, Baghdad military spokesman Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi conveyed the bombers were targeting the motorcades of two senior government officials who were headed to work.  

The cars exploded shortly after 8 a.m..

Two police officers and an official at al-Yarmouk hospital said nine people, including five Iraqi troops, died while 23 people were hurt in the attack.  

The vehicle exploded about 400 meters from the security checkpoint on a western road between the Green Zone and Baghdad's international airport.

Not far from there, two more roadside bombs went off a few minutes later. Police said nine passers-by were injured in the attack outside a restaurant in Jadriyah.
