Iraqi officials said an attempted prison mutiny early Sunday in Baghdad has left at least 19 people dead. According to the AP, security sources said violence broke out when at least one prisoner tried to overpower a security guard and grab his weapon while prisoners were being moved from one cell to another.
At least 10 prisoners and seven guards died in the clash. The identity of two other victims was not immediately clear.
Among the dead was an al-Qaeda member, Huthaifa al-Batawi, also known as the "Emir of Baghdad." He was accused of planning an attack on a church last October that killed dozens of people.
Elsewhere in Iraq, on Saturday, Iraqi officials said gunmen killed five people during a robbery of a money exchange office in the central city of Baquba.
