Iraqi security sources on Sunday confirmed the killing of at least 43 people and injuring of 40 in a suicide attack on the Office of the Awakening Council in the Radwaniyah, southwest of Baghdad. Reports said that a suicide bomber wearing an explosives vest blew himself up in the among a group of Awakening Council members and army officers who lined up in queues to receive their salaries, police said.
The Awakening Councils have been in recent months a target of many attacks in the Sunni areas around the Iraqi capital.
In a related development, four people were killed and 23 were wounded in a series of attacks in several Iraqi cities.
