The Islamic resistance movement Hamas on Tuesday marked in Gaza Strip its 23nd anniversary. Thousands of supporters gathered for the main rally in Gaza.

To mark the occasion, Hamas issued a special press statement, confirming its commitment to the restoration of Palestinian unity, and calling to end the state of internal division .

The movement alsurged the Arab League to "halt political backing for all forms of negotiations with Israel and to withdraw the the Arab peace initiative, and work to lift the siege on Gaza."

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri conveyed the rally would provide evidence of the group's support in the Strip. "The basic message the big crowds will send to all the parties is that lots of people support Hamas and the project of Hamas is the project of all the people," Abu Zuhri told AFP.

"The aim of the embargo on the Hamas movement and the Gaza Strip was to force us to raise the white flag of surrender, but Hamas will not break," he added.
