Armed men on Sunday killed five Iraqi police officers in a drive-by shooting in the western part of the country. The gunmen approached a checkpoint in the town of Rutbah in Anbar province on Sunday and opened fire on the officers, who were stationed there.

Meanwhile, the president of Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region on Sunday warned that ties with Tehran could suffer if Iran continues cross-border shelling against opponents. "We condemn the artillery fire against Iranian citizens in the border region of Kurdistan," Massud Barzani said, in his statement. Last week, Iranian forces shelled Haj Omran, a border crossing 70 kilometres northeast of the Kurdistan capital of Arbil.
