Egypt unveils amended constitution

Egypt will hold a presidential vote "within a month or two" of a parliamentary elections promised for September, the country's transitional military government declared on Wednesday. General Mamduh Shahin made the announcement as he unveiled an amended constitution incorporating changes endorsed in a recent referendum.

The amended constitution emphasizes that no political parties based on religion are allowed.

Wednesday's constitutional declaration says that the elected President of the Republic would appoint of a deputy during a period not exceeding 60 days. It also deals with the mechanism of the "state of emergency," which will not exceed six months, and may not be renewed without the consent of the people.
