Egypt's ruling National Democratic Party posted a massive win out its Islamist opponents from in the first round of the election to the parliament, according to official results. The NDP won 209 of 221 seats in the first round of voting on Sunday. A total of 287 seats will be contested in the run-off on December 5. According to AFP, the Muslim Brotherhood failed to win a single seat. Four small opposition parties won five seats between them and seven went to independents who are not affiliated with the Brotherhood. According to election officials, turnout was 35 percent. Human rights groups claimed Sunday's vote was marred by widespread violence and fraud, and the White House voiced disappointment at the way the election was conducted. On its part, Egypt's electoral commission dismissed the claim. "The commission categorically rejects the allegations that the election was marred by fraud," commission spokesman Sameh el-Kashef conveyed.
