Ahmed Maher, Egypt's former foreign minister, died on Monday. He was 75. Egypt's state-owned MENA news agency said Maher passed away Monday morning, hours after he was hospitalized with unspecified health problems.

Maher served as foreign minister from 2001 until 2004. He was recalled from retirement for that post in 2001 to replace Amr Moussa, who became the Arab League chief.

Maher was ambassador to the USA until he retired in 1999. He spent his final years writing and lecturing in foreign policy.
