Egypt: Christian demonstrator killed in clash over new church

One demonstrator died and dozens were hurt on Wednesday as Christian protesters clashed with Egyptian security forces over the denial of permission for a new church, AFP reported. A security source said that a young male demonstrator died during the protests over the church and that a senior police officer was among the wounded.

Hundreds clashed with police in a number of locations in the Talibiya district of Cairo's Giza governorate, with demonstrators throwing stones and Molotov cocktails, and the police responding with tear gas. Some 20 police were hurt in the clashes, including Giza's deputy security chief, as well as around 15 demonstrators.

The official MENA news agency said more than 3,000 people had particiapted in the protests, 93 of whom were detained.
