Two Egyptians died and at least 18 were hurt early on Saturday when Egyptian military police stormed Cairo's Tahrir Square to disperse protesters, medical sources told AFP.

They are the first reported deaths in the square since president Hosni Mubarak stepped down in February.

Eyewitnesses said that the military police fired shots into the air with automatic weapons at dawn on Saturday while other sources reported the intervention was by forces belonging to the Interior Ministry. The demonstrators set on fire two buses, one military vehicle and one civilian car.
