Bahraini security forces on Sunday fired tear gas and clashed with protesters trying to reach Manama's financial hub. According to AFP, Bahraini forces also fired gas at protesters in Pearl Square for the first time since an anti-government sit-in started there last month, witnesses said.

Some 350 activists blocked the entrance to Bahrain Financial Harbour and started to set up tents in the business area. The interior ministry conveyed 14 policemen were hurt in riots.

Police also fired tear gas from a bridge overlooking Pearl Square but pulled back shortly afterwards, witnesses said.

The interior ministry called on protesters to "remain in the (Pearl) roundabout for their safety," insisting the operation was aimed at reopening King Faisal Highway next to the financial centre.
