At least seven people were injured in a second night of clashes and gun-battles between the Yemeni army and protesters in the southern port city of Aden, Three of the wounded are troops, AFP said.
Yemeni government troops used tear gas and gun fire to break up the protest which took place in the streets until late Wednesday night. The protesters set car tires on fire, blocked several roads and injured a soldier when they hurled stones at the security forces.
In Al-Saada neighbourhood, two troops and a civilian were hurt in fire exchanges. During the clashes, security forces detained dozens of members of the Southern Movement. The Yemeni authorities arrested last June one of the leaders of the Movement, Ahmed Darwish on suspicion of involvement in an attack on the intelligence HQ in Aden, killing 11 senior intelligence officers. Darwish died in prison.
It is noteworthy that the Southern Movement has been calling for the secession of the south from the north and the return to an independent state as was the situation before the unity in May 1990.
