Sources have linked the Arab League chief, Amr Moussa's remarks about his intention to resign in the coming weeks to his wish to run for the Egyptian presidency. The source close to the Arab League secretary general stressed that one can not separate the decision of Moussa to step down from the Arab League and the upcoming presidential elections, following a constitutional and legal amendments that would allow free election within the next few months.
The source added that the decision of Moussa seems correct, especially because he enjoys the support of the Egyptian street to lead the country over the coming period, under the current circumstances. The 75-year old Moussa has been leading the Arab League since 2001. In the previous decaded he served as Egypt's foreign minister.
In a related context, the Arab League is expected to hold a meeting in Cairo on Monday, at the level of permanent delegates to discuss the changes and recent events in a number of Arab countries, particularly the revolutions of Egypt and Tunisia.
