Amr Moussa, Secretary General of the Arab League and a leading candidate to be the next president of Egypt, said Islamists will not take over power in Egypt, but will have a role in the political arena.
Moussa said in statements to Al-Hayat newspaper, published on Monday: "Egypt will be a democratic state and will not go backwards." And he added: Part of the Egyptian political system will be controlled by Islamist, or will based on an Islamic reference in the Constitution." Moussa spoke on this issue amid growing fears regarding the rise of Islamists in Egypt. "Islamic extremist groups are too weak to take power," he stated.
The 74 years old Moussa said he plans to serve one term as the Egyptian president. According to him, he already drafted his platform. He stressed the need of Egypt to have a presidential regime, and not a parliamentary coalition government; because political parties are still very weak.
