An attack by suspected al-Qaida gunmen has killed at least six Yemeni troops and injured at least four others. The attack took place Sunday in the central province of Marib.
The attack came a day after the Yemeni army killed six gunmen belonging to the Yemeni branch of Al Qaeda in the province of Abyan in southern Yemen. Reports also said that Yemeni warplanes Yemeni bombed the town of Jaar, Abyan Governorate, and the area around the presidential palace in the city in order to disperse large numbers of gunmen surrounding the compound.
In recent days there are reports from a number of southern provinces that civilians and gunmen took control on a number of government buildings and police stations after the withdrawal of security forces from some districts and cities. This led to growing concerns among Yemenis that both al Qaeda and the Shi'ites will use the deteriorating security situation in the country for their interests.
