At least 11 people were killed and more than 100 wounded in fierce tribal clashes in the southern Tunisian mining town of Metlaoui, the country's state television reported. Following the deadly events, local authorities decided to deploy additional security forces and to extend a curfew that was imposed on Metlaoui on Saturday.
Clashes in the town between rival tribal factions started late on Friday after an altercation between two youths.
People used homemade bombs, guns and iron bars in the town, some 400km southwest of the capital, Tunis. Reports said the fights started following news that only certain tribes would be offered jobs at the nearby Gafsa phosphate complex.
Among the latest victims were a 30-year-old man knifed to death early on Sunday and another who died of his wounds late on Saturday, said AFP.
