When news came out about Saudi Arabia hiring eight more executioners, naturally many of our first thoughts were, "How does one hire executioners? What would the government put in the qualifications?"
Luckily Saudi Arabia provided a downloadable PDF of the job listing.
The job is described as a "judicial functions" assistant to perform "religious" punishments: implementing "murder by Islamic law after the issuance of the Islamic ruling," as well as the more terrifying, "amputation after the issuance of the Islamic ruling."
Here are screenshots of the document in Arabic and English, translated by Google (our translator helped us fill in the gaps):
On the left as as brief intro: "This opening includes performing executions and amputations according to Sharia law. As well as all other matters related to this field."
Saudi Arabia's soaring death sentences this year have been a major controversy in the international community. In the first five months alone, the country has put 85 people to death over not just murder but drug charges. The Human Rights Watch counted a total of 88 in 2014.
Do the kingdom's authorities show hope of slowing down? With these new staff members, they might not have to.
