Jordanian flags and other celebratory images are all over Jordanian social media today as the Hashemite Kingdom celebrates 70 years of independence.
On google.com/jo and Google Doodles, the search engine featured its iconic logo over the Jordanian flag. Facebook sent happy independence day greetings to its users in the country, and #IndependenceDay was trending on Twitter, primarily among Jordanians.
Even Uber got in on the festivities. Cars on the transportation application appeared as moving Jordanian flags, users in Amman told Al Bawaba.
King Abdullah addressed the nation yesterday, May 24th for this occasion. In his speech, he also commemorated the centennial of The Arab Revolt, when Arab and European states defeated the Ottoman Empire, resulting in its partition into British and French spheres of influence via the infamous Sykes-Picot Treaty.
Jordan celebrates its independence from the United Kingdom on May 25th each year. Fun fact: the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the British government notes that the British Mandate of Transjordan technically ended a few days later on June 17th, 1946.
Happy 70th, Jordan!
